Diani Beach Resort Guide

With swaying palms and soft, white sand caressed by glittering, turquoise water, Diani Beach has many of the ingredients of the perfect tropical holiday destination. It is deservedly popular, and as one of Kenya’s premier Indian Ocean resorts, it has a large and still-growing assortment of hotels and restaurants, some of them extremely luxurious by local and often international standards. Thanks to warm seas and beautiful coral reefs it is also one of the best places to get close to the richly diverse marine life of the southern Kenyan coast, by snorkelling, scuba-diving or joining a boat safari.

Who goes there?

The resort hotels strung out along this 8km (5-mile) stretch of coast are primarily aimed at package holidaymakers, who often combine their visit with an inland game park safari. Prices range from moderate to high, with very few options for budget travellers. It is perhaps no surprise that the European visitors who take holidays here tend to be well heeled.

Where in the world?

Diani Beach lies on Kenya’s Indian Ocean coast, 35km (22 miles) south of the nearest city, Mombasa, which is in turn 487km (303 miles) southwest of the capital, Nairobi. Its location along a stunning white sand beach, which skirts the shore for an impressive 25km (16 miles) has cemented its position as one of Kenya’s premier resorts.

When to go?

The best months to visit Diani Beach are January to March when the chance of rain is low. Temperatures are fairly consistent fluctuating between 27-31°C (81-88°F) during the day and rarely dipping below 22°C (72°F) at night. April to June are the wettest months with frequent and often heavy rainfall.

Beach

The beach is the area’s major attraction – long, soft, white and lovely, it comes close to the tropical ideal. The offshore reef offers rewarding snorkelling; it also keeps waves at bay, making paddling and swimming close to shore a pleasure, and providing perfect conditions for windsurfing lessons. The only drawbacks are the seaweed that gets washed up from time to time, the tides which, at their highest, cover much of the sand, and the hustlers (known locally as beach boys) who can be hard to shake off.

Beyond the beach

The romantically inclined can cruise the shoreline in a dhow (traditional boat): a favourite destination is Kisite Marine National Park near the Tanzanian border, which offers outstanding snorkelling. Elsewhere in the underwater landscape, there are rewarding wrecks for scuba-divers to explore; you’re likely to see turtles, mantas and barracuda among many other marine species. Whale sharks patrol the coastline between January and March. To spot one, or even snorkel beside one, you can join a half-day whale shark safari organised by the East African Whale Shark Trust , a locally based conservation organisation. To learn about local village culture, take a guided walk with the Kaya Kinondo Ecotourism Project.

Family fun

Diani Beach has plenty of relaxed, family-friendly resort hotels that go out of their way to keep children amused with special menus, sports, games and other activities. The beach is safe for swimming but kids who want to snorkel will have to be strong swimmers to reach the reef – it is better to take a boat or canoe. The Colobus Trust (Diani Beach Road), set up to protect Diani’s endangered black-and-white colobus, is great for monkey spotting.

Retail therapy

Diani Beach’s resort hotels have shops where you’ll find souvenir T-shirts and local crafts such as soapstone sculptures, shell and bead necklaces and sisal baskets. Beach sellers also offer souvenirs, including wooden animals, brightly coloured kangas (sarongs printed with Swahili proverbs), kikois (stripy cotton wraps) and shukas (red Maasai-style blankets).

A night on the town

The after-dark entertainment scene in Diani Beach is thoroughly tourist-oriented, centred on the resort hotels: most of these have nightly music and dance shows featuring local talent, followed by discos ranging from the glitzy to the downright cheesy. The place to go for a more local scene is the inland village of Ukunda, which has a few rough-edged late-opening bars, you’ll also find the Shakatak (Diania Beach nightclub here.

Eating out

Although many tourists see no reason to venture beyond the restaurants of their resort hotels, Diani Beach’s shopping centres and coastal strip offer a good selection of alternatives with broad international appeal, including pizzerias, curry houses and places offering English, Chinese and even Seychellois cuisine. To enjoy a good local meal pop into The African Pot -Coral Beach Cottages. For sheer romance the new seafood reastaurant a the Shaanti Holistic Health Retreat , Buddha on the Beach is hard to beat.

Getting around

Most locals travel by bus or matatu (shared minibus), which are often extremely crowded. They run along the main coast road from the Likoni ferry, just south of Mombasa, towards the Tanzanian border, passing through Diani Beach. Hotel staff can book local taxis and airport transfers for their guests; you can also find taxis near Diani’s main Ukunda junction. Diani has a couple of offices that hire cars and motorbikes.

Exploring further afield

Many visitors to Diani build a safari into their stay. With a few days to spare you could head inland to Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks, which together form one of the largest game-viewing areas in the world. Far less crowded than Kenya’s more popular parks, they are home to lions, hippos, elephants, zebras and a great many species of antelope and gazelle. Alternatively, to experience another side of coastal life, travel north through Mombasa to the beaches and marine parks of Malindi and Watamu, great for snorkelling and diving, or immerse yourself in Swahili culture on the island of Lamu.

The art items in Kenya include sisal baskets, elephant hair bracelets, Maasai bead jewelry, musical instruments, silver and gold jewelry, soapstone sculptures, wooden carvings, tribal masks, Maasai figurines, paintings, prints and sculptures. These art items are available in the arts and craft markets and shops throughout the main tourist centers of Kenya.

Cloth and Fabric in Kenya also form interesting art items. The cloth and fabric available in Kenya are batik cloth, kangas (women’s wraparound skirts) with beautiful patterns and even Kenyan proverbs printed on them and kikois (type of sarong for men) that come in many different colors and textiles. These are good art items to take home from your Kenyan trip.

African jewelry has been quite popular for centuries in the world market. Kenya offers rare pieces of African jewelry containing cowry shells. Kenya is also known for its soapstone carvings found in Western Kenya. It is the Gusii and Abigusii ethnic groups which hand carve these Kissi stones into exquisite pieces of Kenyan art.

Music

Benga is a truly Kenyan music style. Benga is high-energy dance music that originated after the 1940s when Luo musicians started playing traditional tunes with modern electrical instruments.

Most other popular music styles have received influences from abroad. Taarab is the traditional Swahili music played at the Kenyan coast, and is heavily influenced by Arabic and Indian music styles. Lingala – modern upbeat party music – came from Congo, where the deteriorating political situation made many artists flee to East Africa. American hip hop and gangsta rap has infiltrated Kenya like a virus. Pictures of 50 Cent and Snoop Dogg are everywhere in Nairobi.

Dance

The hypnotic swaying and leaping in Masai and Samburu dancing, are the best known forms of Kenyan dancing. In their energetic dancing, warriors display their strength by leaping high in the air.

The Masai and other tribes perform regularly for tourists who visit their villages. In tourist venues along the coast, Mijikenda dance groups often give performances.

Sigana

Sigana is a traditional performance art which contains elements of all the major Kenya art forms: storytelling, song, music, dance, rituals etc. Active participation is a key feature of sigana. The line between performers and audience is less clear than in many other Kenya art forms.

You won’t see these often along the tourist trails, but the Mzizi Arts Centre in Nairobi organizes monthly Sigana performances.

Theatre and performance

There are several theatre groups in Kenya, most of them based in Nairobi. Names to remember are the Mbalamwezi Theatre Group and the Phoenix and Miujiza Players. They often perform at the foreign cultural centres in Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu.

In Nairobi, there’s the Kenya National Theatre. It’s known for the controversy it created with the production “I Will Marry When I Want” by Ngugi wa Thiong’o and Ngugi wa Mirii, which brought them into confrontation with the government.

Kenyans reportedly also like of satire and stand up comedy. One popular group is Redykuylass (‘Rediculous’) which featured in a weekly TV program with a mix of political and social satire.

Literature

In Kenya, oral narratives are the oldest form of literature. Oral stories are still important in many communities. Written literature, in Swahili and English, emerged in the beginning of the twentieth century. However, only after Kenya’s independence (1963) a body of national literature came into being.

An important author (novelist, playwright and essayist) is Ngugi wa Thiong’o. As a child on missionary school, he was a devout Christian, but later he rejected Christianity and became a fierce critic of colonialism. He changed his name from James Ngugi to Ngugi wa Thiong’o in 1976 and embraced his native Kikuyu culture, as well as Marxism.

While having written the first novel in English by an East African author – “Weep not, child” (1964) – he published his first book in Kikuyu in 1980: “Caitaani Muthara-Ini” (Devil on the Cross). He now argued that literature written by Africans in a colonial language is not really African literature. In 1992 Ngugi became professor of literature at New York University.

Cinema

There is a small film industry in Kenya, which is struggling to stay alive, like elsewhere in Africa. However, a new generation of Kenyan film makers is emerging, inspired by the success of the Nigerian video industry. One such film director is Kibaara Kaugi, who in 2004 produced the acclaimed “Enough is enough” – a narrative of the famous Mau Mau uprising – on a minimal budget.

Also, foreign film makers have used Kenya as a backdrop for their works. The most famous example is of course Sydney Pollack’s “Out of Africa” (1985) with Merryl Streep and Robert Redford, which is about the life of Danish author Karen Blixen, who emigrated in the 1910s to Kenya to become a coffee farmer. A recent international movie is “The White Masai” (2005), after the real story of the Swiss woman Corinne Hofmann who married a Samburu warrior and joined tribal life. There is no happy ending here. These and other movies are reviewed on my movies about Kenya page.

Some Nairobi cinema houses are 20th Century Cinema (Mama Ngina Street), Fox Drive-In Cinema (Thika Road) and Nairobi Cinema (Uchumi House, Aga Khan Walk).

Crafts

In Kenya you will find much beautiful and fine craft work. It’s sometimes amazing to see people in rags sitting outside their ‘home’ (if you could call it that), and produce wooden carved tables and chairs of a beauty you won’t see anywhere in North America or Europe.

Most crafts are produced for tourists. It’s best to set aside any purist misgivings you might have over their authenticity, and just enjoy them for their own beauty (which they often have). Compare this to American or European culture, which is also eternally developing. The Beatles are just as ‘truly European’ as Beethoven is!

Wood carvings of people and animals can be bought everywhere. Classic are the very long sculptures of women carrying baskets on their heads.

Soap stone objects are another popular for of Kenya art. Soap stone is mined in western Kenya by the Gusii and Abigusii tribes. They then produce beautiful sculptures, chess sets etc. from it. Each piece is carved individually by the craftsmen and then wet sanded, polished and dyed all by hand. Soap stone products can be bought everywhere in Kenya.

Jewelry (often in the form of beads) are another Kenyan speciality and they can be bought in all colours of the rainbow. Jewelry is important in African culture. Much Kenyan jewelry contains cowry shells. They are not only beautiful but also symbolic.

Masai spears and shields are also popular souvenirs. But first check with your air company and your customs whether you can take them home. Another solution is having them sent home by mail. Some tourist shops offer this option.

Shopping for a great gift to give your girlfriend can be a bit frustrating if you don’t know exactly what she likes. Actually, it’s not that hard to figure out things that she likes if you can open up your ears and listen to what she says about fashion, makeup, handbags, shoes, jewelry and other girly type things. Maybe she won’t talk to you directly about these things because she knows you’re not that interested. But, she’ll talk to her mom, sister, cousin or girlfriends.

Next time she’s on the phone with a female relative or friend, or having an in-person conversation, perk up your ears and listen for clues for items that make her joyful. You’ll often hear phrases like “I love it” or “I really want one of those” slip from her lips. If you can’t get any clues this way, then just ask her to write down a list of 10 things that she’d love to get as a gift. This more direct approach will relieve you have having to do a lot of guesswork.

You can also come up with some great girlfriend gift ideas by looking at the clothes she likes to wear, her jewelry, type of high heel shoes, whether or not she wears stockings, what kind of perfume she sprits on her neck and wrists, what books she likes to read, what her favorite food is and other stuff.

If you want to surprise her with your gift, then you’ll need to become a bit of a detective. When she takes her shoe off, look inside it to see what size she wears. Pick up a t-shirt or blouse that’s laying around and see what size the tag says: XSmall, Small, Medium, Large or XLarge. If you can, take a look on top of her bedroom dresser or inside bathroom cabinets to see what brand of perfume she likes.

To get you started, here are some gift suggestions she may like:

Silk Blouse – most women will have use for a nice, silk blouse. Silk is soft and smooth and feels great against the skin. She can wear it with a pants suit, dressy skirt or even a pair of jeans. To be safe, stick with these colors: white, black or red.

Cashmere Sweater – a cashmere sweater is considered a top-of-the-line luxury clothing item because it is soft in texture and wears well. Cashmere sweaters are definitely more pricey than regular knit sweaters, so she’ll understand the value of this gift right away. There are pull over styles and cardigan styles – either one is a good choice. Stick to neutrals like: black, brown, gray or tan.

Animal Print Handbag – women love animal print handbags and these are really fun and funky. You can find a variety of this style in prices ranging from $25 to $200. Popular prints are: zebra, leopard, cheetah, snake, crocodile and giraffe.

Pashima Shawl or Scarf – a pashima is a large shawl made out of rich material that a woman can wear as a light cover up. Pashimas can be worn with a cocktail dress, a suit, or any casual outfit. They’re very versatile in how they can be wrapped around the body. There are a wide variety of colors, so you’ll need to know what colors your lady likes.

Jeweled Tennis Bracelet – if you want to see her eyes open wide, present her with a dazzling tennis bracelet with either sparkly diamonds or cubic zirconia stones. Real diamonds will cost you more than cubic zirconia, but no matter what your budget, either version will look gorgeous on her wrist.

If there’s one thing that most women love to shop for, it’s women’s fashion clothing. There’s something oddly fulfilling about acquiring new clothes. Women love to buy new tops, bottoms, dresses or skirts. They love to buy new women’s outerwear, sweaters and shoes. There are so many different classifications of women’s fashion clothing to shop for! There are also a huge assortment of prints and colors of clothes to choose from. Women love to shop for clothes. However, women love to shop for different reasons.

Women don’t mind spending a lot of money on clothing. It’s hard for some women to find women’s fashion clothing that fit just the way they like it. When they do find clothes that fit perfectly, they need to buy it, no matter what the cost may be. Some women rarely find clothes that are flattering to the body, so when they find a particular item, they purchase that item in several different colors or prints. If you’re going to spend a lot on women’s fashion clothing, you have to make sure that it makes you look good. When you wear clothes that make you look good, you are more confident and feel good about yourself.

Of course, women also shop for women’s fashion clothing for practical reasons. Women’s outerwear, as the name suggests, are worn on days that you need to go outdoors. Outerwear is an extra layer of thick clothing that keeps you warm during cold weather. Women’s outerwear consists of pieces of clothing such as coats, jackets and vests. Women know that you can be both practical and stylish at the same time. Many females love to shop for women’s outerwear in bright and cheerful colors to counter the gloomy weather outside. Some trench coats and jacket come in polka dots or even zebra stripes.

Some women buy clothing during off seasons in order to save money. People can purchase thick coats and jackets at inexpensive prices during the summer season, when wearing thick women’s outerwear would be unthinkable. Similarly, some people like to buy bathing suits, bathing suit cover-ups and beach shorts during the winter. Buying out of season clothes is generally more inexpensive then buying clothes that are in season. You can buy more items this way, making your money go a longer way.

Women love to buy clothes because it is a form of expression. The great thing about women’s fashion clothing is that you can use different pieces of clothing to express yourself. You can mix and match different colors and prints in order to come up with your own unique sense of style. You can look sophisticated by wearing basic colors such as black, brown or grey. If you’re feeling happy, you can wear an item of clothing in a loud, vibrant color. You can wear clothes that are currently trendy or you can come up with a trend of your own. There are no limits and how you want to express yourself is completely up to you.

many people think it maybe impossible to be comfortable and stylish at the same time. I want to say they have the wrong opinion, because ugg boots is a king of footwear where comfort meets style. Since 1978, when Uggs was founded by a surfer from Australia, named Brian Smith, the company has provided boots that offer both style and comfort.

The material of ugg boots are natural insulator keeping the body close to its normal temperature. Any moisture is wicked away, so feet stay warm and dry all the time,

Authentic UGG Boots

Authentic UGG boots may have a synthetic rubber sole but they are always made from one piece of sheep skin, not two pieces glued together. There is no cowhide used in the process, such as suede on the outside with sheepskin on the inside.

And of course no synthetic materials are used. These days it is difficult to tell synthetics from the real thing just by sight or even touching. The difference becomes obvious when wearing the synthetic boots because they do not confirm to your foot and the boot does not breathe.

Dress Boots

The Stella is a zippered boot that fits close to the calf and features a stacked 2.75 inch leather heel for a more formal look. The suede finish on the boot is accented by smooth leather on the heel and a band at the top. Stella comes in black and espresso. Perfect combined with a skirted suit for the office or a dress with a jacket. Picking up the color of the boot in a leather belt is a smart finishing touch.

The Caroline boot is all wrapped up in fashion as the boot is accented by a belt that wraps around the 12.5 inch shaft and buckles at the top of the boot. The 2.75 inch stacked leather heel makes it perfect for dressier occasions but it still feels and looks at home with jeans. For evening wear combine the boot with silk pants and a velour sweater.

Tall Boots

The woman’s ugg classic tall boots have a new look with metallic gold, marbled nickel or marbled copper leathers but it is the same old familiar feeling of comfort. There are many colors included, such as chestnut, black, chocolate, sand, and gray.

Try the Classic Tall boot with jeans tucked inside for a different look. Paired with a sweater or jacket in the same color as the boot, the look is complete. The boots go with cut jeans and can be worn with skirts. For those who prefer the adventurous side of fashion, leather and lace always go together. The metallic colors are fashion forward and combine beautifully with animal prints such as leopard, tiger, or zebra.

This kind of tall boots are beautiful and keep you always warm. And you can wear them with your jeans or other clothes, it looks naturally and beautiful.

and still there are some other boots of ugg, want to know more? Go and visite uggsaleau.com

The assignment: “In the modern world, first impressions are more important than ever. What is your appearance telling others about you, and is it true? Identify which of the typical high school stereotypes you fit into (jock, nerd, prep, etc.) based on your clothing, music, and extracurricular activities, then compare typical assumptions about this stereotype to your own personality.”

I have no idea what stereotype I fit into.

My clothing:
-pants: mostly colored skinny jeans (I’ve got purple, electric blue, black, gray, normal blue denim, and hot pink. On the lookout for yellow :])
-skirts: knee-length, flowy, patterned skirts (like the ones they sell at Forever 21.)
-dresses: knee-length, flowy, and patterned again! A lot of times I wear dresses to school with t-shirts underneath and sneakers.
-shirts: mostly graphic tees in bright colors. Some have ’save-the-world’ or peace sort of sayings/pictures on them, but for the most part it’s just like a bright shirt with a random bright graphic on it. Sometimes I wear tank tops with jackets, but mostly tees.
-jackets: zip-up hoodies, patterned (zebra print that fades blue to purple to pink to white, gray with hot pink paint-splattered-ness, music notes, like that.)
-shoes: converse (black high tops, yellow low tops, gray low tops, used to have clear low tops but they’re so worn out I’m not allowed to wear them anymore.), ballet flats. If I wear heels (which is not often. I’m 5′8″ and feel like an amazon in heels.) they’re either these red ones with white polka dots and bows, or these ones that are half black half white (black outside half, white inside half.)
-accessories: always wear 2 peace sign necklaces and about 8 peace/friendship/duct tape/hemp bracelets. Sometimes brightly colored big bead bracelets/necklaces, stud earrings. I like patterned tights (like as in fishnett-ish-ness woven into patterns, not like printed on). I always wear a hair bow or ribbon of some sort (one day I didn’t and people kept asking if I’d gotten a haircut haha.) My nails are usually painted hot pink and/or black, usually patterned somehow (striped, checkered, etc.)
-an outfit I would absolutely love: http://www.polyvore.com/love_this/set?id=6606765
-an outfit I have and do absolutely love: http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/app
-hair: it’s very very curly (little ringlets.) and I leave it that way. About shoulder length, and I’ve got side bangs (like not the type with a side part then the bangs, like no part and bangs like the sort most girls have in elementary across the whole fron but longer and like to my lips so I sweep them over to the side). My hair’s brown, and I’ve never dyed it.
-makeup: does chapstick count?

My music:
-Cobra Starship
-Bayside (they are amazing. Probably my favorite band. Look them up!)
-Queens of the Stone Age
-once in a while Fall of Troy, depending on my mood
-Ludo
-Led Zeppelin
-AC/DC
-Pink Floyd
-Nevershoutnever!
-Wolfmother
-mostly rock and alternative, I guess.

Extracurricular activities:
-MUSICAL THEATER.
-voice lessons
-dance (mostly ballet, but this year I’ve started tap and musical theater dance)
-acting
-activism (I’m into a group at my school helping raise money/awareness for the war in Northern Uganda and supporting a school over there, and I’m big into peace rallies/marches/all that, raising awareness, supporting causes however I can.)
-I write songs. a lot. but I haven’t told anyone because I’m pretty much sure they’ll hate my songs and make fun of me, and I just don’t really want to deal with that.
-piano (not well yet, just started this year.)
-trying to teach myself guitar.

So, how would you stereotype me?

:] thanks a lot!

For both women and men, scarves are becoming a magic fashion weapon when people are expecting white Christmas. Just like it was during the fall and winter seasons last year, flowers and skulls are still extremely popular fashion trends. The ethnic style and checked scarves gains more popularity this year. As long as coupled with a simple dress, you could show the unique style. We have presented the new stylish and cute scarves for you to choose.

These scarf with the printed design is made with the cotton and linen cloth. Both ends of this scarf are severed into a curled shape to make it look more graceful. In order to make them a timeless fashion piece, the classical patterns can be printed on the scarves. If matched with a simple T shirt, the printed scarf can be a wonderful finishing touch. Even if the weather is fine, you can go with a long skirt to stand out.

Especially the pink ones, the skull scarves are pretty lovely. Simple black scarf with white dress make us impressive quickly. You can use unique black and white skull scarf with a vest to make your dress exciting. The whole outfit is also a good choice in the office and you can try it to win your compliments.

If you have a sense of retro styles, the ethnic style scarves are absolutely the perfect choice for you. The national printed patterns on these scarves highlight the exquisite and handsome qualities. The black flowers in the white background show the unique design. It perfectly matches with a vest and boots and it is essential to enhance the beauty of women. Especially when combined with suits and boots, printed winter scarves with tassels are a very eye-catching accessory.

Checked scarves can be tied multiple ways, all of which are practical to the wearer. The cowboy scarf knot is simple, practical, and highlights the sweet. You can also wrap it around your neck a couple of times, instead of using cowboy scarf knot, to ensure the stylish modern girl is present.

One of the most sought after scarves is the animal print version, which is sometimes called the leopard version. With the development of current society, the processing of scarves is very sophisticated. Even if it comes from an animal skin, it will not smell gory as it has been processed many times. Moreover, we will certainly not be allowed to kill that many animals with the development of human civilization. They become our protecting ones and they are no longer the conquered objects.

The animal print scarves fashion people wearing are not really from the animal any more which could be from silk or cashmere. If you desire to be hip and trendy, the animal patterned scarves are a great fashion statement. There are also a huge amount of wildlife patterns like leopards, zebras, and snakes. The reason of the popularity for this scarf might be as follows: it combines the beauty and wild very well and also psychologically satisfies the pursuing of unique. These animal print scarves combine a subtle nod to our primal nature with a civilized, stylish functionality.
