Can I wear a white skirt suit (from New York and Company) to a job interview?

I am 22 years old, graduating from college and the suit is everything traditional, except it’s white. I’ve read everywhere that you should stick to a dark suit like navy, black or gray. is this true? will i get punished for wearing white? PS – i’m wearing a black shirt underneath with black shoes.
