The 2009 prom season is just a few short months away. Across the country, girls are hunting out the latest prom trends and fashions. With so many dress options to choose from it can be difficult to figure out what dresses are in style and what dresses are last year’s news. As a rule of thumb, if you like the dress and it fits your body well, you should wear it and enjoy it! Here is a guide to some of the hottest prom gown styles this year:

Bold, Colorful Prints

Prom dresses do not have to be a single color with beading or bows like they often were years ago. Prints are extremely popular this year, especially charmeuse prints that are colorful and bold. You can find tons of styles in stunning fabrics combining lines, floral designs, or even animal prints. Do not be afraid of the audacious prom dress choices now available. If prints are not your forte, try first considering vivacious, exciting colors. Instead of a pale green, bland dress, opt for choosing a grassy color. Instead of that powder blue gown, try on choices that are brilliant sapphire and sky blues. This is not the year to be subtle with color.

Open Backs

If you want to be daring with your prom dress, consider a style with an open back. You can find designer looks with a swooping back or straps that cris cross across your back. Before you buy a dress, make sure that it follows all of your school’s prom dress rules as well as approval from your parents. Many schools have dress codes during outside events such as prom.

Trains

Bridal gowns are not the only dress that can have an elegant train. Dresses with trains are all the rage for proms this year. Do not worry; most dress that have trains are detachable so you do not have to worry about your date stepping on it as you happily dance the night away. You can also find trains that bustle up and attach in the back so that you do not have to worry about the train tearing or dragging on the ground all night.

Short- Length Dresses

Over the last few years, short dresses have grown in popularity, and that is no exception for prom season 2009. Instead of a long gown, consider a tea-length ensemble that shows off your fabulous shoes without being an inappropriate length. Classic short silhouettes are extremely fashionable and look great on just about any body type.

Beading

While in 2007 and 2008 prom dresses with sequins were extremely popular, this year beading is all the rage. Beading on dresses can add a little sparkle and even create prints using contrasting colors. If money is tight, look for dresses that have just a few beads sprinkled around the top of the dress. They are typically less expensive than dresses with all-over beading.

White and Black Options

Even though bold, bright colors are popular this year, an all black or all white dress is always a classic style to wear. Look for a dress that evokes feelings of Hollywood glamour like Jackie O or Marilyn Monroe. When wearing an all black or white dress, you can accessorize with jewelry in any bright colors such as sunset orange and neon green. You can also find black or white dresses with rhinestones and beading that sparkle for an added hint of style. Try looking for classic shapes that flatter your body type. A white or black dress is all about the silhouette you create.

Tulle and Feather Skirts

Along with the in-style shorter length dresses for prom, a short, belled-out skirt made of tulle or feathers can be fashionable as well. Choose a skirt that creates a shape flattering to your body. When you go for a tulle or feather skirt, keep the accessories light. Your dress material is already an embellishment, so too much jewelry can often be overwhelming.

Gold and Pink

While bright colors are in style this year, gold seems to be the metallic jewelry of the season. If you choose to wear a gold dress, non-gold simple earrings and a few chunky bracelets can easily complete your Hollywood look. If you are going for another colored dress stick to gold-toned jewelry instead of choosing silver this year. Gold looks great with just about any color. If you are not the gold jewelry type, pink is another popular accessory color for the season. All bright hues are popular as the summer months approach, but pink jewelry is especially fashionable in 2009. All shades of pink, including pastel pink and hot pink are favored by style magazines and retailers. No matter what your skin type or body type may be, you can find a shade of pink that works well for you.

One-Shoulder Gowns

Prom dresses this year are taking cues from the Hollywood’s runway and the red carpet. Celebrities such as Michelle Obama, Kate Winslet, and a number of other celebrities have been wearing one-shoulder gowns to show off just the right amount of skin for any occasion. A one-shoulder dress looks great on just about any body type.

Everyone wants to stand out on their prom night. Every guy wants to have the coolest tux and every girl wants to have the prettiest dress. Ladies, step away from the traditional pastels and pick a style with some real pizzazz for your prom this year. Spring 2009 prom looks include some real stand out fashions that will really make others take notice of you on the dance floor. Here are some fashion-forward looks and ideas that will help you choose a prom gown that will capture serious attention on that special night.

Pair a zebra print with fresh, eye-sizzling neon green

Mix it up a little bit. Try a solid color with an unexpected splash of print in the form of a sash. This year’s prom dresses play with a color palette that runs the gamut from shimmering ombres to mouthwatering shades like watermelon and candy pink. There are completely unexpected accents like criss-cross bodices that mix two different colors and waist wraps that lace up the back in a contrasting color.

Choose a simple dress with one stunning detail

You can wear a dress with a draped Watteau train on a slim, sleek cling of silk charmeuse or a high-low ruffle hem and jeweled halter neckline. Unusual accents really draw the eye when combined with a simple flowing A-line dress. The simpler the silhouette, the more dramatic the look of a single standout accent will be.

Surprise the eye with an unexpected matching of animal print and color

Animal-inspired prints are hot this year, but the trend is toward surprising color choices like jaguar stripes in shimmering orange and white or leopard spots in burnout raspberry pink. The more unexpected the color combination, the more surprising the look and the more attention you will receive when you strut your stuff on the dance floor.

Show off some leg

Don’t be scared to go with a short, flirty style dress. Baby doll dresses are high on the hit list for this year’s prom. The look is playful and sassy, these dresses don’t cling, they swing. Pick a trapeze dress in a swingy pink print or play with one of the cutest new hem looks for the season, bubble skirts. Be feminine and sweet in ruffled lace but punch it up with a shimmering black satin sash, or pop them in the eye with a fire-engine red number featuring a shirred bodice.

Give them a little something back

Make sure that your dress is just as beautiful from the back as it is from the front. This year’s back details include criss-cross lacing and bare-back plunges that dip well down your back. You will also find flounces and back slits and peek-a-boo keyholes to catch admiring glances even as you are walking away.

Turn up the heat with glittering embroidery

Look for a dress that has glittered embroidery beaded with crystals or picked out with metallic thread. You’ll find dresses with beaded detailing at the neckline or waist, or with crystal-gleamed embroidery outlining the bodice. Combine a few surprises with rhinestone-studded criss-cross straps across a bare back, or flash a bit of sassy leg with beading along a knee-high slit.

One of the easiest ways to stand out is with an eye catching color that really pops. Some of the hottest colors this season are fruit-drenched brights like tangerine, lime and watermelon. Pair them up unexpectedly to gain some attention and get ready to light up the dance floor. Slip on a pair of full length bright lemon gloves with a short and sassy watermelon silk dress; you should try to match your shoes to your gloves. Wrap up a slinky lime green dress with a sheer scarf in amethyst or wine. Be playful, be sassy and be unexpected. Before trying to mix-and-match bright colors, you have to know the secret. Pick colors with the same intensity so that they spark against each other rather than muddying the look. Tangerine and lime, raspberry and lemon, apple and banana, as long as you stay in the same brightness range, these colors won’t clash

Don’t forget that your accessories also add some punch to your look. Make sure that everything you wear on prom night contributes to the overall look you want to achieve. Keep your hairstyle and shoes in proportion to your dress. For instance, updos and mini-dresses don’t usually match. If you’re going for a retro Barbie doll look, pick hair pieces that match the look instead of fighting it.

Prom night is the most magical night of the year, so be sure that you find a dress that makes you feel magical. Whether you’re a fairy tale princess or Grecian styled goddess, you’ll stand out on prom night in colors and styles that make you feel and look your best.

I just don’t know how to accessorize and I especially don’t know what I should do with my hair. I have brown hair cut with layers and it lays about two inches past my shoulders. My dress is strapless, so I’d be baring it all. I definitely want to wear my hair completely up so it stays out of my face. Any styling suggestions? Accessory suggestions?

In case you were wondering, my dress is strapless and it has a black bodice with a red sash underneath and zebra printed skirt. Floor-length.

Deciding what to wear to the prom is most probably one of the most challenging decisions to make for any young lady. This comes in second after the initial budget allowance has been allocated for the occasion. The choice and range of prom gowns and accessories are enormous and making the ideal ones can become a nightmare.

<I><B>Online browsing can save time and money</B></I>

Fortunately there are many designers that are aware of this situation and produce ranges that are trendy, chic and totally affordable. The most beautiful and elegant prom gowns can easily be purchased online at very reasonable rates and will be delivered to your doorstep. This will avoid running around from store to store and online designs usually cover a vast range of style, color and price. Often the best bargains and sale items can be seen at a glance and purchased without any hassles.

<I><B>Helping your teen make the best choice</B></I>

Teenagers generally know what they like but it does not necessarily mean that it is the most suitable to wear to a prom. Find out what it is that she would prefer to wear. If it is something that will literally knock everyone’s socks off then you have may have a trend watcher on your hands. She would definitely prefer out to make an entrance with a glamorous outfit.

Beautiful long flowing silky dresses with spaghetti straps and open backs are the rage at the moment and are available in a variety of shades and styles. Gold, silver and bronze shades remain as popular as ever and they do not require outlandish accessories as the dress is in itself a huge statement. A-line styles work well with any figure as it gives a slimmer appearance and a much more elegant look. The A-line skirt can be wide and flowing or short and bubbly to show off a pair of stunning legs.

Often the short dress has a sexier appearance than a long one. This depends entirely on the individual taste and build of the teen. Metallic colors are often enhanced with simplistic beading or braid on the bodice or skirt. Gold is always an attraction and is splendid on a well proportioned figure.

Another outstanding color that will definitely draw attention is a shimmering white. A flowing white gown in silk taffeta skirt and a brocade bodice is a stunning choice for an entrance. If your teen is a bit on the fuller side but is keen to have the glamorous look, it would be a wise idea to opt for the empress look. This look is the raised waistline and is ideal for those with larger breasts and hips.

The free flowing skirt from the bodice beautifully conceals hips and other areas that you do not want accentuated. Those with a pear shaped figure or short legs are well disguised in this particular style and a very elegant appearance is achieved. This is a popular style amongst designers and the latest trends will most certainly be found in it. The new funky styles are bold and extraordinarily colorful without taking the focus off ‘elegant and chic’. A-line and empress styles are found in an abundance of rich silky colors with large prints. Anything from large polka dots to rainbow shades is on the market. The skirts are wide and flowing while the bodice is often plain and bare to show off a beautiful neckline or exquisite jewelry accessories.

If you have a teen that prefers a more traditional outfit but is also glamorous then the ball gown would be an ideal choice. They are still highly popular and available in various colors and styles. The strapless ball gown with the scooped neckline is quite elegant and also offsets a stylish and matured appearance. The volume of the skirt is often enhanced by added layers of tulle or taffeta. The ball gown shows off best on those with slender figures. This style is also ideal if you are opting for the hour glass look. Short girls should rather opt for the A-line or princess style for a more balanced and dynamic appearance.

<I><B>Jewelry and accessories </B></I>

Making the right choice when it comes to jewelry, shoes and bags is important for completing and rounding off the garment. Earrings, necklace, bracelet and tiara have to carefully chosen as the event calls for elegance and class. Simplistic but exquisite designs are often the choice to set off a magnificent gown or attire. Jewelry accentuates the facial features and neckline and should blend in with the outfit and not outdo it. A beautiful pair of earrings is often enough to complete the entire look. Teens have lovely fresh faces and a minimal amount of makeup and jewelry is often enough to create a stunning look.

Prom night is, needless to say, still one of the most important nights of any young girl’s life. The anticipation that leads up to this night can at times become overbearing for the teenager as well as for the stressed out parents. This is especially so if the teen happens to be a young female. With the variety and choice of the most exclusive gowns readily available, the young lady can transform into Venus de Milo or any other goddess you can think of.

A new life starts at the Prom…

Of course, that is the whole idea; to look and feel as stunning and beautiful as possible. Dads usually dread this moment as their little girl gradually becomes a young adult. An elegant and show stopping attire can also make this one of the proudest moments of his life. It is important that the correct style, length and colors are chosen as these factors determine the end result.

Winning styles for the Prom

Spaghetti straps or strapless dresses are an all time favorite at these events and happen to be hot on the scene right now. Bare neck and shoulders are exceptionally feminine and prom dresses are mostly designed to show off these areas. An A-line style that is body hugging and where the skirt flows all the way down to the floor is ideal for the tall slender figure as well as those looking to achieve a more slimming effect. If you are not sure as to which cut will enhance your body the best, choose the princess cut as it is exceptionally versatile. This is also a classic look and as bright, bold colors are red hot you can easily have it made in your favorite shade.

A silky and slinky flowing skirt in vivacious colors such as blues, greens, yellows, pinks and reds are the trend right now and has stunning effects. Zebra prints and peacock colors are highly acceptable for this year’s prom. A-line or princess cuts can be easily worn above the knee and look as fresh and elegant. Bubble styles or short, full and flirty flared skirts can show off a pair of beautiful legs if those are one of your best assets. The bare back has become the in thing and is a stunner if you have the correct proportions for it. These flowing princess styles show off best in silky fabrics as the natural flow of the garment adds to its elegance. Using a heavier quality silk or satin helps the garment to maintain its shape.

If you are opting for the fairy tale look, the ball gown will always remain a winner. Still remaining high on the list for the 2009 prom they can be found in deliciously soft pastel shades of pink, peach, blues and greens. Strapless ball gowns with beaded or lacey bodices are elegant and remain top on the favorite list of all time greats. The necklines can vary but the scooped neckline style remains very popular and is by far the most elegant. A beautiful necklace will immediately draw attention if it is worn with this neckline.

If you would like the dress to have the traditional ‘floating ‘ effect, simply choose one that has extra layers of lining that will create more volume. If you are on the short side, be careful when it comes to choosing the fullness of the dress. Too much volume in the skirt will result in the attire looking unbalanced if you do not have the height to pull it off. For the short person an A-line style will be much more appealing and flattering as the desired results can be easily achieved.

Another winning style for those with varying chest sizes is the emperor style. As this style raises the waistline to under the busts, the skirt is allowed to flow freely around the hips onto the floor. This is very elegant indeed and is ideal for those that would like to hide a larger bust. If you would like to have your short legs or pear shaped body nicely hidden on your prom night, the empress style is not only hot but overtly regal. The style is also one of the favorites of most designers as its versatility is highly sought after. They are found in many types of fabrics ranging from silks and taffetas to chiffon. The lighter fabrics tend to have a much better flow and these dresses are available in short or long skirt lengths.

The final touch

Wearing the appropriate shoes, jewelry, makeup and accessories adds to the final touches to a magnificent style hopefully a perfect evening. Makeup should be light and enhancing on the lovely young and fresh face. Jewelry should be ideally classy but noticeable.

Prom season will be here before you know it, so it’s important to start shopping for prom dresses now. You don’t want to be caught without the perfect dress on your special night, so here’s a preview of what’s available.

Sherri Hill Dresses

Designer Sherri Hill is known for her stunning evening dresses, pageant dresses, and – of course – prom dresses. Color, texture, and embellishment are the story this season. If you want to be the belle of the ball, look for her stunning ball gown in aqua and turquoise, with an overlay of gold layered tulle. The metallic glitter fabric will catch everyone’s eyes, as will the oversize satin sash that cinches your waist.

Formal dresses don’t have to be long, and no one knows this better than Sherri Hill. Her sleeveless baby doll mini dress is sassy with sequins covering the sweetheart bodice, and the layers of tulle are wired at the hem for an extra flourish. Available in colors ranging from black/fuchsia to pink/green, these cocktail dresses will definitely turn heads.

Less is always more, but you need to leave something to imagination. Sherri Hill offers a stunning backless gown that features twisted, shirred chiffon crisscrossing the front and back for complete coverage but that never fails to intrigue. Paired with a flowing sequined skirt replete with a train, and available in red, black, gold, or white, you’re sure to be a hit.

Jovani Dresses

Prom wouldn’t be prom without Jovani. Draw attention with a gorgeous dress that features a sleeveless red lace peek-a-boo bodice accented with beads and sequins, and a flowing skirt with a thigh-high slit in the front. Or opt for a turquoise long gown with sheer crisscross straps accented with beads, a sheer midriff, and a long skirt with a short train. Or even a shimmery mini that will put you in the spotlight.

Jovani is renowned for using prints and patterns, so you can always find the perfect prom dresses to fit your mood. Whether it’s black and white polka dots on white with a red sash, a colorful abstract print that will flash as you dance, or a black-on-white print designed to bring out your animal instincts, you’ll always be able to match your mood with your sense of style.

Celebrity Prom Dresses

If you like what you see in the movies or on the red carpets, prom is a great excuse to dress like your favorite celebrity. You can find a dress like the one Kate Hudson wore in “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” Charlize Theron’s knockout gown at the Golden Globes, or Beyonce’s show-stopping backless number.

Where to Shop

When it comes to shopping for prom dresses, you can’t go wrong if you go online and find a site that specializes in fashionable formalwear. They have the best selection of styles, sizes, and price ranges, and keep you up-to-date with prom news, trends, and tips, so your big night will be one of the best nights of your life.
